Mayan Ruins of Tulum, Mexico

What an adventure!

Another deciding factor for the Western Caribbean route was a chance to see some of the Mayan ruins and learn about their history.  It would have been ideal to visit Chichen Itza, but knew we wouldn’t be able to make it that far and back on the boat in time.  We were hoping to get more than just the touristy stop at Tulum, so we decided to rent a car so we could climb Coba, swim in a couple Cenote’s, and then if time see Tulum too.   The Mayan gods had other plans:)

Weather prevented us from docking on time.  While we were in the first 20 people off the boat, after a quick taxi ride, we arrived at the ferry at 10:00 am – just in time to see the boat sale away.  Of course the next ferry from Cozumel to the mainland at Playa del Carmen didn’t leave until 11.

This is where we should have opted for plan B and enjoyed a Tequila tasting and tour of the smaller San Gervasio Mayan ruins on the island of Cozumel.

After a 40 minute ferry ride, we debated again between a private taxi/tour and the car rental, but ended up waiting another 40 minutes for our car to arrive.  When the AC didn’t work, we didn’t dare delay the trip further and headed on our way – now to Tulum instead of Coba with some hope at still trying to visit a cenote.

Some traffic and rain, plus a stop for gas, slowed us a little, but we made it to Tulum for a late lunch.  Naturally, we missed the tram into the ruins and waited again, but got to watch some of the Mayan reenactments as we did.

After a brief walk, we entered through a tunnel into history.

And then it was back on the tram, in the car through the storm, getting the rental inspected (where we learned to pull a button out for A/C!), a ride to the other end of town for the ferry – but it was the wrong one – so a run along the beach back to the other end of town, a rough ride on the ferry back to Cozumel (several people were sick from the stormy waves), a taxi ride to the dock, and 20 minutes to look for some souvenirs for the kids.

Maybe we just wanted a taste of adventure since we never made it on the Amazing Race:)  We are glad we got to see Tulum, but it would have been smarter to enjoy a week in Cancun, & the rest of the Yucatan some other time to see the things we wanted to see instead of trying to cram it in on one day.  I don’t feel regret at not savoring the island of Cozumel, though, since we got so many other relaxing days – and still had one more boat day on the ship.
