We hadn’t been camping since May 2004, but the tent and all of our supplies were still in great shape when we pulled them out of storage. Melissa and Casey were visiting family for a wedding in SC so we camped a couple nights and met them for a day.
When I first told Lex we were going tent-camping, he was scared and begged to go to a hotel or use an RV– he must have read too many stories where people camp in the wild and are attacked by a bear or some wild beast. When I explained there would be other people camping, he relaxed, “Well why didn’t you say that earlier!” He LOVED hunting for firewood and hiking and catching fish, but playing “life” the board game was probably his favorite part.
All three kids loved sleeping cuddled up to mom and dad. When they woke in the morning and saw where they were, each smiled and snuggled in close. They also loved cooking dinner – and smores – over the fire and using their glow sticks after dark. I was pretty impressed with the state park – geocaching, fishing, tennis court, trails, playground, and an awesome lobby with board games overlooking the lake that came in handy on the cold windy mornings.
We enjoyed seeing a pair of ducks throughout our time. The boys got to play, and shoot an air pistol, with the boy at the next campsite. I liked watching the sun rise over the lake together. Notes to self for next campout – eggs and bacon is fun, but donuts would have been just as exciting and a lot less work; the pillow topper was a great idea but bring one air cushion for a kid; you’ll have to wash everything – even if it never leaves the bag.
Camping was a fun adventure, but the highlight was of course spending time with the Deckers. It was great to catch up and just talk with my best friend. The kids are all growing up so quickly.
