At Dinner
Lex: This chicken is delicious.
Mommy: Thank you, Lex, but it is actually pork.
Lex: Pork with a “p” or fork with a “f.”
Mommy: Pork with a “p.”
Lex: “P” like the letter or pee like from my penis.
On Our Way to Vote
L: Who are you voting for again?
M: For president or the other . . .
L: President Bush?
M: No, he’s been president long enough, so it’s someone else’s turn. Do you remember whom Mommy is voting for?
L: Barack Obama, but who else is there?
M: John McCain?
L: Yeah, I’m going to vote for him.
M: Why?
L: Barack Obama is on tv too much. (there seem to be a few negative commercials about him during Ellen)
M: Oh. Well, you don’t have to tell anyone who you’re voting for – how about we just say we voted.
L: Okay.
Out on a Walk, gunshots heard in the distance
L: What’s that loud noise?
M: Um . . . a gunshot. Hey, look at the pretty trees.
L: A what?
M: A gunshot.
L: What’s that?
M: Well, do you know what a gun is?
L: No.
I pause at the beauty of his innocence and successfully change the subject until later. When he sees daddy several hours later, he asks again. Thankfully daddy thought to explain that some people buy their food from the store and others shoot it and eat it.
Watching Morning News, I sigh at the latest job cuts
L: What’s wrong?
M: Well, some people won’t be able to go to as many meetings anymore like daddy does.
L: And they won’t have money to buy things?
M: That’s right. We’re very lucky that daddy goes to lots of meetings and we can get money to buy things.
L: But daddy is nice so he can give money to people at his meetings.
